I developed a shrimp allergy sometime between pregnancy and shortly after my child was born. I’ve had asthma my entire life (well, probably, but it wasn’t diagnosed until I was two, after multiple attempts to get a diagnosis by my parents, because it was less common several decades ago), but no food allergies prior to this pregnancy. So now I don’t even mess with shellfish of any kind, because I never know when I could find out it’s more than just a mild shrimp allergy. Fortunately, it’s no great loss to me, because I’ve never liked seafood much. My kid, who is now a teenager, also has asthma, but it’s not nearly as severe as it was when they were younger. I know from experience how terrifying it is to feel like you’re unable to breathe, and I also know the fear of watching a child struggle to breathe. We had a close call when our daughter was three and in the ICU for several days with pneumonia. She was on a nebulizer for a full day and night during the worst of it. This video was hard to watch. The most unbearable agony would be to lose my baby, and I can hardly imagine how awful it must have been for this boy’s family, looking back and feeling it could have been avoided if they’d known, and yet they simply didn’t know. It’s the added sense of control from knowing about these things that gets me through watching videos like these, because otherwise it’s just too tragic. I hope that, at the very least, this boy’s story can help save some lives, and I hope his family has been able to find some peace. Always remember: better safe than sorry; don’t hesitate to get help if you’re not sure what’s going on with your health!
